At present, MKS is giving financial, technical and marketing supports to 31 groups of artisans-cum-entrepreneurs, largely based in and around the Kolkata city in West Bengal, Benaras in Uttar Pradesh. They are engaged in the production of a variety of handicraft items – ranging from silk made ups to soft toys to articles made of leather ladies bag, purse, wallets, keyrings, coin purse, money box, piggy bank, christmas cracker items, hanging, soap stone t light holder, decorative items, wooden toys,games, musical instruments, brush, bull horn and brass puzzle, terracotta, papier mache and many others..
MKS (Madhya Kalikata Shilpangan), based in the city of Kolkata, India, has begun its journey way back in 1994 with the objectives of providing support to artisans and craftsmen in the unorganized sector of our society, who are talented in their traditional crafts but could not get better price for their products due to lack of access to proper marketing. Along with, it also has taken up the task of providing training to existing artisans and newcomers, who want to further improve their income through skill upgrade.
Since its inception, MKS has been actively engaged in promoting marketing of its target group's products on Fair Trade principles, developing communities for artisans, providing informal education and vocational training to them.
For this, it always strives to provide support to them in understanding changing dynamics of markets and marketing on the Fair Trade arena and outside, make them aware on changing designs of handicrafts and above all keep them alert in maintaining the global standard in quality of their products.
At the same time, MKS also keeps a vigil on ensuing that artisans get fair wages equitably by finding local, regional and international markets for their produce with transparency and social accountability.
